White and black magic in the modern context

I’ve been thinking about this topic for a long time, and I believe it’s becoming increasingly relevant. You might be wondering why I chose to focus on magic—it may seem like an outdated subject. But the truth is, it doesn’t matter what word we use to describe it; it’s always the same thing – influencing reality by directing energy.

In ancient teachings, we can find many other ways of categorizing magical practices. There are terms such as love magic, sexual and ritual magic, informational magic, green magic, red magic, and so on. However, I would like to simplify this and focus only on white and black magic. First, I’d like to explain how I perceive these two concepts, and then how these forces operate in a modern context.

You’ve probably come across terms such as manifestation, attracting abundance, directing attention, influencing and creating reality, raising vibrations, materializing desires, magnetic attraction, and so on. But what do these concepts actually mean?

Let’s put it as simply as we can.

I’d like to emphasize once again that this is my personal perspective — it’s not based on any specific book or the teachings of any particular person, so it may not align with what you’ve learned yourself.

It’s all about energy

In my article “Initiation of a Spiritual Journey,” I describe that everything is energy. I also explore in depth the difference between acting from the ego and acting from the heart. And that’s what this is all about — to put it simply, black magic is energy created from what the ego desires, while white magic is the energy of unconditional love — the energy of the heart.

In this context, it’s also important to remember that each of us possesses personal will, while at the same time we are influenced by the will of our higher self and the will of the Whole (the Universe, God, the Creator, etc.). I want to emphasize this right from the start because I often encounter people who claim that others in their “reality” have no personal will (since they are merely their projections), and therefore their actions, behavior, and words can be influenced according to one’s own needs and desires. This is not true. All of us who are incarnated in this moment have our own personal will and act according to it in our best interest. None of us is a puppet that someone else can manipulate at will. If things were as these people claim, then any of us could be someone else’s puppet — and surely that’s not something we’d want, is it?

Of course, some might argue, “In my reality, I’m not anyone else’s puppet, and therefore this doesn’t happen.” If that statement were absolutely true, then each of us would live in a completely separate reality. Everyone would be with their ideal partner, surrounded by love and abundance every day — everything would be perfect, and the world would be beautiful. But that’s not what we experience, is it? Why? Because each of us is part of a greater whole (which, by the way, also has its own will — and even its own ego), and everything has to make sense together as one.

White magic

White magic is the energy of pure love. Love always begins with self-love. This means wanting the best for ourselves and treating ourselves with kindness and respect. In practical terms, it means directing our attention (our energy) toward what brings joy, fulfillment, and abundance. Simply put, we maintain our vibration (our inner state) at the highest possible level, which in turn shapes a 3D reality that flows with us and supports the realization of our desires.

Black magic

Black magic, on the other hand, is the energy of intense desire and the attempt to influence reality from the outside in, in order to achieve a desired inner state. This means directing our energy toward manifesting a 3D reality in a way intended to create “positive” feelings and emotions afterward. It is the energy of the ego — of manipulation, control, and a sense of personal superiority.

Practical view

Let’s look at a practical example. Someone falls in love and feels a deep affection for a particular person (their Special Person). However, this SP doesn’t behave the way they’d like — maybe they leave, date someone else, or simply ignore them. This causes the person pain, sadness, and anger, which then manifest in their reality and influence their behavior and inner state.

So, the person decides to shape their reality to achieve the desired outcome — their SP loves them, they share a loving relationship, and everything feels wonderful, bringing them comfort and satisfaction. They decide to try manifestation (energetic influence) techniques to attract their SP. And if they perform them “correctly,” it may indeed happen — the SP returns, and they begin a relationship.

So what’s the problem?

If you read carefully what I wrote above, you already know.

Influencing another person’s will is always black magic. And that remains true even if it appears positive, because we do it out of love. If we love someone unconditionally, we let them choose their path themselves. What belongs to us will always find its way. If that person is meant to be in our life, they will be — perhaps in twenty years, but they will. If we try to influence someone else’s free will for our own benefit, we are paradoxically acting against ourselves, because that energy will always return to us negatively. In the old teachings, this was described as a backlash — the energy reflecting off a person who is energetically equal to, or stronger than, the manifestor. I, however, believe that when black magic is used, a backlash occurs every time — it is the price we pay for using energy at the lowest frequency.

It is the energy of the ego — of desperation, distress, the need to control outcomes and timing, and the illusion that we (our logical mind) know what is best for ourselves and for others.

Because if we act from a place of low energy frequency, we might not even notice that our obsession with that person is what’s blocking us. It may be that that particular SP was never meant to be our partner, because someone who truly matches what we desire is “waiting” for us. That SP may have been merely a karmic matter whose “time had passed”, and therefore left our lives. We cannot see this truth unless we raise our vibration. This applies to any situation.

To understand it better, I wanted to try for myself to what extent it actually works. I want to emphasize that I only tried it for that purpose. I never consciously manipulate other people — if someone chooses to be in my presence, it’s because they decided to, not because I forced them.

As a very sensitive and empathetic person, I felt the effects of such behavior immediately, which is why I now discourage it even more. The SP begins to feel the energy of the manifestor — and although that energy is generally pleasant (love), it can disrupt their inner state, leading to obsessive thinking (about the manifestor) and increased energy output.

Normally, this might cause the SP to think they actually love the manifestor and want to be with them, prompting them to reach out. Imagine this — the energy we emit manifests in the other person as emotions and thoughts. It’s quite possible that this person loves you, too, but most likely, there is a reason they are not with you. We don’t know their psychological development, needs, or the hidden reasons for their behavior. Strong emotions and obsessive thoughts can disrupt the SP’s inner state, and the outcome can therefore be the opposite — inner pressure and intense feelings may appear as anger, bitterness, and resistance. They can also cause deep longing, for example, if the person wants to be with you but cannot. And always — to the extent of their level of awareness — they will know their behavior is being influenced, which will create frustration.

And this holds true even if the manifestation “worked,” the SP returned, and they began a relationship. Sooner or later, frustration will always surface in the SP — they’ll stop behaving as desired, or in some other way, the manifestor’s magical actions will come back to them. Some people deal with this by continually trying to influence their SP. But what kind of satisfaction can one really feel knowing they’re living with a human puppet — someone who doesn’t act out of genuine love, but because they’re being energetically forced to? You can answer that for yourself.

And now imagine the opposite situation. Or rather — don’t we all know it already?

Picture a woman saying:
“My partner thinks I’ll always be cheerful, always listening, that the house will always be tidy, dinner cooked, the children cared for, and that in the evening I’ll feel like having sex. He does whatever pleases him, and I’m here just to keep him satisfied.”

The problem begins when this puppet-like role stops working, and the woman continues:
“But this isn’t who I am — I have my own needs and desires. I’m more than all of this…”

I know an example exactly like this — the manifestation of an SP through black magic. In this case, the spell worked perfectly at first. They were “in love”, and the relationship seemed wonderful. But after some time, the backlash began. The woman’s partner started treating her without respect, even physically assaulting her in public.

This happened because her actions perfectly reflected her inner state — a lack of self-respect and self-love. And of course, there are multiple layers to what was happening. But it’s important to realize that other people are not our projections — their presence, the way they behave toward us, and the dynamics of the relationship reflect our inner state. There is a difference between that.

When I truly love myself and place myself first, I no longer need the love of any SP in the world. I can be perfectly content on my own — and naturally, that state will attract someone with the same energy, someone who will respect and love me for who I am.

How not to do black magic?

First and foremost, we must respect each individual’s personal will and never interfere with their path. It doesn’t matter whether we’re talking about manifesting a relationship, a job interview, or the outcome of a certain situation. The only thing we are truly responsible for is ourselves. This means directing all our attention inward — toward maintaining inner peace and love. Everything else will naturally find its way to us when the time is right.

This doesn’t mean that other people can’t be included in this process. Sometimes we might think of an old friend and feel like meeting for coffee… and then we unexpectedly run into them or they call us out of the blue. That doesn’t mean we’ve influenced their free will — we didn’t push or manipulate them in any way. It simply means our energies aligned in harmony, and that resonance manifested in the outer reality.

As my main example, I used the manifestation of an SP because it has been very popular since people began practicing magic. But the same model applies to everything: a mother who dislikes her daughter-in-law because she has a bad influence on her son and therefore wants him to break up with her, influencing a boss to give us more money and promote us, and so on.

A special part of black magic is what’s called conscious harming. That means consciously creating unfavorable conditions in order to hurt someone or turn things in “our favor”. There is no worse form of black magic — and, of course, such an act will be paid for by a high price. Always.

We might associate this with folk witchcraft, the magical practices of some jungle shamans, or ritual ceremonies. The truth, however, is that it happens commonly and is usually not so dramatic.

Our thoughts, words, energetic practices, and practical actions can be directed at harming another person.

It reminded me of an example involving a colleague at work, which happened, I think, about 15 years ago. She was angry with me because she thought I was friends with a woman who had worked there before me and had bullied her. That wasn’t true — I only knew her by sight. Nevertheless, her anger turned against me. She began speaking badly about me to our supervisor, playing nasty tricks, and pointing out my mistakes (which she had deliberately arranged) so that I would be fired. Which ultimately happened, under rather dramatic circumstances. After I left, she even became the head of the entire department. I don’t know anything about her life; I only know that she hasn’t worked there for a long time. Therefore, I can’t say how it backfired on her, but I’m sure she wasn’t happy or fulfilled.

The most insidious expression of black magic is in thoughts and words — they look harmless, yet they have long-lasting, deep effects. Imagine slander, insults, gaslighting, belittling, humiliation, provocation, judging, division, lying… and we use all of this not only toward other people but also toward ourselves.

Remember — what creates emotion draws our attention. Where our attention is, our energy flows. And it doesn’t matter whether those emotions are pleasant or unpleasant. It’s on this basis that social media algorithms, television news and programs, and advertisements operate… all of this is a kind of magical practice that influences our thinking, emotional state, and consequently our actions.

I’d also like to add that just as a person can feel when someone is trying to manifest them, they can—consciously or unconsciously—also feel when someone is working against them with another form of black magic. It shows up as unpleasant sensations, an unwillingness to be in that person’s presence, physical symptoms (such as pains in different parts of the body), heaviness, fatigue, and irritability without an obvious cause. If we are energetically weaker (we operate at lower vibrations, or we simply allow ourselves to be “dragged down”), that person can manipulate us—affecting our thoughts and emotions—so that we ourselves begin to complain about the situations, we create resistance, provoke arguments, and experience hatred and depressive states. It all depends on the goals of the person or group involved.

That sounds awful, doesn’t it? Even worse, it’s completely common and happens every day. But remember again that all of this is a mirror of our inner state. So what must we do to avoid becoming victims of manipulators and low energies?

Practicing white magic

Practicing white magic — that is, directing and harnessing our life energy for our own benefit – is absolutely essential.

Practically speaking, it means keeping ourselves at the highest possible vibration we have reached (which then continues to rise through such actions) and maintaining it regardless of whatever influences and projections from the physical (3D) world act upon us.

Believe it or not, more and more people are going through a spiritual awakening. It’s happening quietly, out of the spotlight. And it’s no longer the prerogative of a few “chosen” people we would call “shamans.” I believe what we are collectively experiencing at this time is a kind of spiritual cleansing — old structures are collapsing, and lies are coming to light. More and more people are falling into burnout, frustration, and an inability to keep playing socially prescribed roles, to behave inauthentically, or to live like a machine.

It’s a time of chaos — like when an individual must confront their shadows and integrate them. It’s unpleasant to re-experience buried traumas and blocks we’ve created. This is also manifesting on a collective level. But none of us is a superhero who can save the whole world. Each person is responsible for their own inner state and, by doing so, helps others, because, to a certain extent, they shift the paradigm of collective consciousness and the unconscious at an archetypal level.

Taking responsibility for our inner state

There are no external forces that dictate how we should feel or what we should experience. All of that is determined by ourselves alone, and it is our responsibility. Our mood, thoughts, actions, and physical health — we create all of it ourselves.

I have a nice example of this. Once, I was on a bus going from the port town of Portofino to Santa Margherita. If you’ve ever been there, you know what I mean. The buses from Portofino are small and already crowded at the first stop. People are packed inside, it’s hot, and hard to breathe. That day, it was perhaps even worse. I wasn’t feeling well—I was going through the early stages of an expansion of consciousness and just wanted to reach my destination. At about the third stop, three men tried to get on the bus. The problem was that there was absolutely no room. They became very aggressive, shouting at the driver and at the people pressed against the doors. By forcing their way in, they made the crowd even more cramped.

Frustration grew. One of them continued verbally attacking the driver and venting his anger at everyone around. Some people began protesting and arguing with the man, which escalated into a physical scuffle. At that moment, an old woman who was sitting a little way from the men stepped in. In an absolutely calm, matter-of-fact voice, she said, “What’s going on, boys? Do you think it’s necessary to behave like this… you know it isn’t the driver’s fault; he’s doing what he can.”

The most aggressive man immediately calmed down and said to her, “I know, I’m sorry… It’s just that we’ve been working all night, we’re tired and want to get home as quickly as possible. We’ve been waiting here for two hours because every bus that leaves Portofino is overcrowded and doesn’t even stop,” and then they continued talking as if nothing had happened and parted with a smile. I remained just an amused observer of the whole situation. And you can see that in that moment, we were all in the same confined place, yet each person involved acted and experienced the situation differently.

In my frequently mentioned (:-)) article, I described how to alleviate the unpleasant effects caused by the expansion of consciousness, but now that I think about it, this can also be applied to white magic. So anyone can (and should) do it, regardless of the level of consciousness they are currently at.

The main points are:

Inner work — self-reflection, journaling, shadow work, conscious work on raising your vibration (listening to your heart and acting in alignment with it, directing energy inward, self-love and self-care), authenticity, and firm boundary-setting.

Calming the nervous system — meditation, breathing exercises, and spending time alone and in nature.

Personal protection — physical protection, energetic protection, aura and energy cleansing, rituals — forgiveness, cutting cords, freeing oneself from energetic influences, etc.

These three points are acts of self-love, so you can see that there is nothing selfish about that.

In any situation, you can “pause” and consciously tell yourself: “I don’t have to react to this. I choose my inner peace and calm. I put myself first.”

The more you practice this, the more situations will arise (at first) that used to throw you off balance, make you angry, or force you to invest your energy in them (through emotions). But you’ll see that they no longer affect you, or at least you can choose whether you want to react emotionally. They also serve as proof of how true we can remain to ourselves and how firmly we stand by our own truth (which, again, raises our inner strength and, therefore, our vibrations). So when this occurs, remember it doesn’t mean you did something wrong; it’s simply a test. And don’t worry —if you do not pass the test, the same situation will appear again… till you do. 🙂

Don’t confuse this with a stoic approach — that’s something different. Inner peace is a state that has nothing to do with control or wearing a mask. It’s a state of conscious responsibility and choice, not pretending. Pretending leads to increased inner pressure. Inner peace, over time, will manifest in your outer environment by reducing drama and tense situations. That is a 3D confirmation/reflection of your inner state.

If you wish to support someone and help them on their journey, send them the energy of love, protection, and courage. That is enough. Everything else is not in your hands.

So the overall summary is — white magic is the directing of loving energy inward, which manifests as harmony outwardly. Black magic is the manipulation and control of external reality, which leads to increased inner frustration and dissatisfaction. One gives you energy, the other leaves you drained.

It’s simple, isn’t it? 🙂
